The Book
From fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty’s Rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed’st thy light’s flame with self substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel:
Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament,
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content,
And tender churl mak’st waste in niggarding:
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.
Sonetti Shakespeariani

We have already published some of Shakespeare's sonnets translated by Gabbrielli in the volume on
Elizabethan Authors . Gabbrielli completes his work in this book, offering us a translation of all 154 sonnets, with parallel text.
It is a chance to discover a less popular aspect of the great poet and dramatist, who writes into his plays all his humanity, so that his characters have never faded through the centuries, and have been re-read in "modern" interpretations in all periods, without having to change the original text; into these verses Shakespeare puts his personal story and feelings, without hiding them behind the mask of Othello or of Banquo. And his personal feelings are as lasting as his characters, sincere and recognizable in love, in jealousy, in the sadness of growing old, in the fear of failure, as near to us as to his Elizabethan readers.
Gabbrielli's translation has been a patient and dedicated work, starting with those already published, but that, in his own words, "
the sonnets have the power of cherries, so that one has pulled the next after it, until I'd finished them all ."
And it's a just observation on the sonnets, but also on Shakespeare's work in general, for it's not easy to put it down until you've read it to the end.
